Lighting Your House During a Nighttime Power Outage

Here’s a simple way I light our house during a nighttime power outage without needing flashlights, batteries, or candles.

I keep a set of solar spotlights sitting in the sun to charge at all times but turned off so they’re available only when I need them.

If the power goes out at night, I bring those lights in, turn them on, and set them up around our house.

It takes only one to light an entire room.

Here’s one in our kitchen set to cold white light.

The ones I’m using have an adjustable, attached solar panel. I use the panel as a stand and lay it flat on a table or countertop.

I then point the lamp up towards the ceiling.

They don’t get hot so they’re safer to use around children.

Before this, we’d use our cell phones to light our way around the house but that just caused them to drain more quickly right at a time when you want to conserve their power.

Below you can see our open living room, kitchen, and eat in area lit by 3 solar spotlights. I’m using the kind that have multiple color options which made things kind of fun.

Of course, with about 300 days of sunshine each year here, we rarely have to worry that our solar lights didn’t gather enough power during the day.

If you live in areas with more cloudy weather this solution may not work for you as well as it does for us.

After the first time we used them this way I wished we’d had these when I was a kid. They’d have been really handy in our tent when we went camping!
